I live in the village of Balcombe in the county of West Sussex, in England. After my mother passed away and my retirement, I was free to sell up and do what I always wanted to do, and I suspect an awful lot of other people might, which was to travel and take photographs. It cost the price of a flat in Sussex, and these are the results.

Rewind more than half a century and I drop out of my business management BSc in Manchester and get a job as a croupier, eventually on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. This was at the time of Resorts International, long before the casino was redeveloped into the Atlantis resort. The whole idea was to indulge my travel bug and I even got to visit America, Canada, Gabon and Togo in West Africa.

Anyway, back to photography, and I tell the story because at that time I owned an Olympus OM1, a beautiful little design classic with manual exposure metering, shooting 35 mm Kodachrome ASA 25 and 64, Ektachrome 160 colour slide films and Tri-X black and white film. Then in 1975, on to the Olympus OM2, with it’s revolutionary automatic light metering, and realizing the darned thing was better than me and the OM1 at it.

I also came across the volumes of Time-Life Photography, which imbued me with the idea that photography might be a worthwhile and noble pursuit.

Fast forward to the 1990’s and I’ve inveigled my way into an IT career, and by 2017 I’d written software for investment front and back office systems, banks, hospital patient administration and laboratory systems, amongst others. My last job was with the Human Fertilization and Embryology Authority in London, the body that regulates IVF treatment clinics in the UK.

In 2003 I fell ill with an unpleasant bowel disease and, while recovering, I took an MA in the study of the life and work of Swiss psychologist, psychiatrist and psychotherapist Carl Gustav Jung at the University of Essex in the UK. My dissertation was on the applicability of Complexity Theory to Jung’s theories of the psyche and was awarded one point short of a distinction because of an omission in the index.

It is customary these days to provide a long list of equipment acquired by the photographer in aid of producing their photographs. I can see why you wouldn’t be interested in my jacket and trousers, so I’ll keep it simple.

Several of the early Sussex photographs were taken with an Olympus OMD EM5 Mk I, my first digital camera.

Most of the others were taken with an Olympus OMD EM1 Mk II.

I used the Olympus Zuiko 12mm, 17mm, 75mm, 12-40mm zoom lenses and the remarkable 100-400mm Leica Panasonic zoom lens.

Several shots of Ireland and Lake Como were taken with a DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone

Honourable mention - my car, a 2004 Mercedes Benz CLK 320 I bought for £5250 which took me on numerous road trips around Europe as far south as Montenegro. Alas, he (she? I get confused with car gender these days) is no longer with us.
